James Wilson

James Wilson has been a photographer in New Brunswick for more than 30 years.

He began with two years of study at the New York Institute of Photography. When he returned to Canada he worked part time at his father's photography studio in Saint John, while continuing to attend photography workshops in the US under such artists as Cole Weston, Lucien Clerque, George Tice and John Paul Caponigro. James is now a full time artist working in the medium of photography.

He uses a variety of cameras while specializing in large format. He does all of his own printing and now merges his traditionally based large negatives with archive quality digital output. His panoramic landscapes, portraits and unique infrared photography are now part of many collections. The support of an arts grant has allowed James to dedicate creative energy to a body of work he calls "Social Studies". This is an extensive collection of black and white portraits documenting people from all walks of life who mostly live and work in New Brunswick.

James participates frequently in group shows throughout Canada and has had thirteen solo exhibits, some of which have toured extensively, such as his popular "Rain Forests of the Pacific Rim", which featured large panorama colour photographs taken in the rain forests of Costa Rica, Philippines, Borneo, and British Columbia.

He has taught students photography privately and is cofounder of the "Atlantic Canada Large Format Camera Workshops" held every summer in New Brunswick. James co-shares international photo tours with photographer Mark Hemmings during winter months.

The art of James Wilson is represented by professional galleries in Toronto, Fredericton, Saint John, Lunenburg and Halifax.
