Ivar Mendez was born in Bolivia but has lived most of his life in Canada. He resides in Halifax where he practices neurosurgery and is a professor at Dalhousie University.
Both a scientist and an artist, he believes that art and science are synergistic activities that promote creativity and innovation. He has had several exhibitions of his photographs in Canada. A selection of his images from Bolivia are published in the book "Bolivia", which can be found in the gallery bookstore on the ground floor and in major bookstores across Canada (Ivar Mendez: Bolivia, Glen Margaret Publishing, 2006, ISBN 9-780920-427644).
As a humanitarian, Dr. Mendez has established school breakfast and dental care programs in remote communities in the Bolivian Andes. The proceeds of the sale of his books and art support those programs.
