Clive Cretney

Clive Cretney has worked for over 25 years in various photography mediums. Born in New Zealand, he immigrated to Canada in 1984, eventually settling in Quebec. He has worked as a commercial photographer, working on location with additional ventures overseas. He also taught continuing education classes in photography at a local technical college. Now employed as a photographer at a national museum, he spends his additional time working on various photographic projects that personally interest him.

For the last ten years Clive Cretney has been exploring the area of alternative photography, specifically platinum and palladium printing, first introduced in the 1870’s. This fascination with photographic technology has lead to further projects investigating obsolete and antiquated processes. His interpretation of modern scenes using these old processes fits well in a space/time continuum. What was once old is now new again and vice-versa.

Many of his photographs explore the innovative ways of using a medium in constant evolution. His projects look beyond photography’s traditional forms and incorporate innovative ways of reinterpreting time and space. This relationship is evolving into new projects that reinterpret past observations being updated for a modern world. Old or new, the final communicative content will be expressed by the image and its message as it is filtered both through the maker and its viewer. The images seek to question our reliance on past imagery and challenge our view on contemporary issues.
